Golf General Manager

Lloyd Martindale

With over 15 years in the golf industry, Lloyd Martindale joined Fancourt in February 2010 to take up the position of Golf General Manager, heading up all Golf Operations at Fancourt, including those of the parkland golf courses, Montagu and Outeniqua, as well as of its premier golf offering, The Links.

Born, raised and educated in the north-west of England, Martindale studied sport management at Portsmouth College before a three-year stint in the British Army and four years as manager of a sports complex in Sinah Warren. An invitation to work as crew onboard a sailing yacht sounded like a great idea, the trip that ultimately led to South Africa and his career in golf in 1994.

First as co-owner of the Wedge Pro Shop and later as manager and green keeper at Goldfields West Golf Course, Martindale established a reputation for a hands-on approach and lasting business relationships. Three years after his appointment as general manager of Maccauvlei Golf Course, he became general manager at George Golf Course in 2005. Shortlisted for the second time among the top three for the Club Manager of the Year Award, Martindale continues to add accolades to his name.

An executive committee member of the Club Managers Association of Southern Africa (CMASA), Martindale has initiated the Southern Cape Club Management Association as well as the Garden Route Golf Passport, an initiative aimed at increasing rounds on local courses during winter. He is also on the board of directors for the marketing company Golf in the Garden Route.

In addition to his Club Managers Association of America-recognised Leadership Edge BMI11 and MBI111 qualifications, he also is an active participant in local education and training programmes.

“I believe in service excellence and a hands-on approach to the condition and playability of a golf course. I consider the golfer’s entire experience at my golf club as my personal responsibility and strive to ensure the best possible experience.

“I am passionate about golf club management and really enjoy the atmosphere of a club – its traditions, standards and opportunity for lasting relationships with members I don’t think can be replicated outside the golfing industry."
